Aerobic Digester consists of a 2 gallon reactor vessel mounted on a steel base, with a liquid feed pump, air supply, and instrumentation for monitoring and controlling the process. The cylindrical wall of the reactor is made from 2 layers of porous plastic material to retain the suspended solids, while allowing treated water to pass through to the outer, annular exit chamber. This design allows the essential features of the aerobic treatment process to be studied without the distractions of having to settle the solids adequately enough for external recycle, a well-known laboratory problem. The porous liners are removable for cleaning, and a spare liner is supplied. Waste water is drawn from a feed tank by a 120V motor driven peristaltic pump. Flow rate is controlled by a variabe run time control that determines the minutes of run time within a 10 minute cycle. The pump delivers the feed to the reactor vessel through a transparent lid. Air is supplied at a measured rate by a small air pump, and discharges into the base of the reactor via an air distribution device. This provides the necessary oxygen for the digestion process, as well as produces sufficient bubbling for stirring and reaction. When a particle fall in a fluid under constant force, e.g. force of gravity, then particle accelerates for some time, but when the accelerating force equals the retarding force (Buoyant force and Drag force) then the resultant force acting on the particle will be zero, and particle quickly reaches velocity, which is the maximum attainable under the circumstances and which is called the terminal velocity. When slurry is prepared in a container and then allowed to remain undisturbed for some time, four settling zones will appear as below: A Supernatant Layer C Transition Zone B Slurry Zone D Concentration Sludge Zone. Anarobic Digester Description The Anaerobic Digester is comprised of two 1.3 gallon upward flow packed bed reactors, with feed rate and temperature controls to allow steady, continuous operation at up to 1.1 gallons per day. The reactors may be operated in series or parallel. A buffer vessel between the reactors permits discharge of excess flow from the first reactor when the second reactor is operated in series, but at a lower flow rate. The flow rates to the vessels are set and controlled by peristaltic pumps. The temperature of each reactor is controlled by an electric heating tape wrapped around the external wall. The temperature distribution within each reactor is maintained to ±1F. Reactor temperatures may be separately set at any desired value in the range ambient to 131šF. The gas off-take from each reactor is taken to a volumetrically calibrated collector vessel operating by water displacement. A constant head, liquid seal device ensures that the gas pressure in the reactor is maintained at a constant value throughout the test run. The collected gas can be exhausted from the vessel and the volume refilled with water during a run, without breaking the liquid seal. Liquid and gas sampling points are located at all strategic points around the reactors. The equipment is mounted on a steel base with an integral barrier to cope with spillage and wash down. The base is finished in instrument tan texture enamel. The control panel is finished in gloss white enamel and silk screened in KEM black enamel. Aerobic Digester

Aerobic Digester consists of a 2 gallon reactor vessel mounted on a steel base, with a liquid feed pump, air supply, and instrumentation for monitoring and controlling the process. The cylindrical wall of the reactor is made from 2 layers of porous plastic material to retain the suspended solids, while allowing treated water to pass through to the outer, annular exit chamber. This design allows the essential features of the aerobic treatment process to be studied without the distractions of having to settle the solids adequately enough for external recycle, a well known laboratory problem. The porous liners are removable for cleaning, and a spare liner is supplied. Waste water is drawn from a feed tank by a 120V motor driven peristaltic pump. Flow rate is controlled by a variabe run time control that determines the minutes of run time within a 10 minute cycle. The pump delivers the feed to the reactor vessel through a transparent lid. Air is supplied at a measured rate by a small air pump, and discharges into the base of the reactor via an air distribution device. This provides the necessary oxygen for the digestion process, as well as produces sufficient bubbling for stirring and reaction. The liquid level in the reactor is maintained at a constant value of 1 or 2 gal. by an overflow device connected to the outer annular chamber of the vessel. Discharge is by gravity to a floor-standing product tank (not supplied). The reactor temperature is maintained by a 3-term PID controller which varies power to an immersion heater within the vessel. Any temperature between ambient and 95F may be selected, with the best conditions being a few degrees above the diurnal maximum in the users laboratory. Dissolved oxygen and pH probes and meters are included. Gas Absorption Column : MTS-909 This apparatus is used to determine the air pressure differential across the column as a function of air flow rate at different water flow rates down the column, and flooding point can be noted. Absorption process of carbon dioxide from air-CO2 mixture into caustic soda solution, is also studied using this system. The system components are mounted within a floor standing painted steel framework. The wetted wall column is a glass column with water inlet and outlet sections and is gimbal mounted to ensure that it can be set accurately vertical. The deoxygenating column is of similar overall size to the wetted wall column, standing vertically adjacent to it. Beside the columns is a control console housing flow meters, pump controls and oxygen analyser. Situated between the columns are two special housings containing the oxygen analysis probes which monitor the oxygen content in the water entering and leaving the absorption column. The apparatus uses water as the working medium, contained in a storage tank at the rear of the unit. Pumps delivering water to the deoxygenator and the absorption column are located at the base of the unit. Dissolved oxygen at inlet and outlet can be measured in rapid succession. The water drains into the storage tank to be recycled to the deoxygenator. In operation, water is sparged with nitrogen in the deoxygenator before entering the top of the wetted wall column. Air is pumped by the integral diaphragm type air pump into the base of the column. The air passes up the column, giving up the oxygen to the water.
